CREDIT GRANTING POLICY

Procedure for satisfying the requirements of a course:

 Students applying to the Associate Degree Nursing Program from other nursing programs shall be evaluated on an individual basis. Coursework from other colleges will be considered for equivalency. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide descriptive course content from college catalogs, course syllabi and/or course outlines. An official transcript reflecting the earned grade must accompany the documentation. Nursing courses must have been completed within the last five years.

1. Transfer students shall file an application for admission to the program as a transfer/advanced placement student (obtain application from Nursing Department).
2. A portfolio must be presented. The portfolio must contain:
   1. Letter of recommendation from the director of the program (or equivalent) from which the applicant is transferring which indicates, (1) the status of the applicant at time of withdrawal, (2) dates of enrollment, (3) conditions under which the student withdrew, (4) that clinical objectives were met. Letter must be mailed directly from the director of the transferring program to the nursing program director.
   2. Documentation of courses completed. (Official transcript or official letter from school).
   3. Description of each course completed. (College catalog copy and course outlines or course syllabi).
3. The applicant’s portfolio will be submitted to the Nursing Department Student Admission Committee.
4. The Nursing Department Student Admission Committee will review the portfolio to see whether the student qualifies for admission to the program and determine placement based on the documentation presented of courses satisfactorily completed which are equivalent in the Mt. SAC program.
   1. Should a question arise as to the equivalency of prerequisite course(s), the Student Admission Committee shall consult with the campus department/division that offers the course for a recommendation.
   2. Should a determination be made that evaluation is necessary to grant equivalency in the event of incomplete coverage of content for a particular course; appropriate standardized achievement tests may be utilized. In the event of this determination, the costs for the achievement test(s) will be borne by the applicant.
5. Applicants will be admitted to the nursing program on a space-available basis. The applicant will be notified in writing of acceptance, placement in the program and conditions of admission.
6. All prerequisite courses must be satisfactorily completed including NURS 70: Role Transition or its equivalent, prior to admission to the program. A 2.5 or GPA higher must be evident in the prerequisite and nursing course work.
7. In addition to the Nursing Department application, the applicant must file an application for the college and meet the necessary requirements for admission to the college.
8. The applicant must make an appointment with the Counseling Department informing the Counseling Department that they have been accepted for admission into the Nursing Program. The applicant must complete an Educational Plan/Graduation Check.
9. Transfer students are responsible for becoming familiar with and abiding by the same policies on retention, promotion, probation, and graduation as students who were originally admitted to the program.
10. Transfer students admitted to the program will not be considered for readmission /re-entry should they not be successful in a course.
11. Transfer students admitted to the program due to closure of a nursing program, or due to  geographic relocation with prior successful progression in a nursing program will be considered as “Advanced Placement Degree Students” and shall have an opportunity for readmission/re-entry, should they need to repeat a course.
