Frontline
Frontline continues to establish a tradition of excellence in vocal jazz music, singing both classic literature as well as selections specially-crafted for the ensemble. The mixed-voice ensemble was founded in 1999 as part of the growing choral/vocal department at Mt. SAC. In their first year, they received a standing ovation at the Cuesta College Vocal Jazz Festival as well as unanimous perfect scores at the Moorpark Jazz Festival. The ensemble also received second place at the 2004 Reno Jazz Festival, the largest jazz festival in the western United States. In 2024, Frontline received their first-ever recognition from Downbeat Magazine – the premier Jazz publication – as one of the finest 2-year collegiate ensembles in the United States. Since then, Frontline has continued to perform on campus, as well as throughout California. The group records regularly, and perform at the Mt. SAC Vocal Jazz Festival each year. In addition to learning a wide range of vocal jazz repertoire – including swing, latin, gospel, and a cappella selections – members of Frontline also spend time learning vocal improvisation, solo techniques, as well as jazz style. Members of the ensemble often take weekly private lessons in jazz voice, since lessons are usually available for any student who enrolls in an ensemble. Ensemble members may enter with a variety of musical backgrounds and experience levels. Auditions take place each fall, and are open to both music majors as well as non-music majors.
