The Engineering Summer Cohort is a free 2-week program marks the first step in creating a community of newly enrolled Mt. SAC students who will be engaged in project-based learning on day one. The ESC program goal is to be an informative and motivating engineering experience that will prepare students for a guided 2-3 year path through the engineering program with subsequent transfer to a 4-year university.
We understand that we lose potential future engineers through general education (GE) courses that are uninteresting to them or prerequisite courses where there’s a lack of understanding of real-world, physical application of science and math concepts/equations. This program will show students applications upfront through a hands-on project involving components of mechanical, electrical, civil and computer engineering. The project will be related back to the science/math concepts and engineering courses that students will take in the Mt. SAC curriculum. A custom course map will be drafted for students by the STEM counselor, where the goal will be at least one engineering course per semester, increasing as students finish their prerequisites. Students in this program will be prepared for entry into and success in Introduction to Engineering in their first Fall semester.
