Bao-Chi Nguyen

I was born and raised in Vietnam, and came to the US when I was 17 years old.

I am a proud graduate of California Community College system!  I went to Pasadena City College from 1993-1996 and transferred to UCLA where I received my B.S. in Pure Mathematics in 1998.  In 2003, I received my Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from MIT. While at MIT, I had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant during the semesters and math instructor during the summers. From 2003-2006, I took on a postdoctoral position at UCI conducting research in Mathematical Biology and taught courses ranging from Calculus to Foundation of Mathematics. I learned that I really enjoy the teaching aspect of my position, so I took on a 3-year lecturer position. The research fascinated me, but I realized my true calling is teaching! My grandfather and my mother were math teachers back in Vietnam, which makes me a third-generation math teacher. With my passion for teaching, in 2009, I applied for tenure-track position at community college and accepted a position at Bakersfield College. 

In 2010, I started at Mt. SAC as a full-time Mathematics Professor. It has been a wonderful journey here because of the students, faculty, and staff. I teach a full range of mathematic courses from Math 50-Prealgebra to Math 285 – Differential Equations and Linear Algebra.

I am so excited that you have decided to take Trigonometry with Support or Calculus and Analytic Geometry! Your success is important to me, so to help prepare you for the next part of your educational journey, I would like to share some information with you about my courses and classroom environments.

Our classroom environment will be one that supports your diverse perspectives and honors your identities. Names are very personal and very powerful. The name by which we choose to be called represents who we are. I recognize that calling students by their preferred name is crucial to ensuring that the classroom environment (whether in person or online) is a safe and inclusive space for learning. If you have a preferred first name that you would like me to use, or would like to share your pronouns with me, please feel free to let me know!

I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge that Mt. SAC is geographically situated on the traditional lands of the native, indigenous peoples whose land was taken from them. I ask you to join me in acknowledging their community, their elders both past and present, as well as future generations. May we strive to honor the land and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations.
