About Us
Mt. SAC receives Federal funding through the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V). This bipartisan measure reauthorized the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (Perkins IV) and continued Congress’ commitment in providing nearly $1.3 billion annually for career and technical education (CTE) programs for our nation’s youth and adults. Perkins V represents an important opportunity to expand opportunities for every student to explore, choose, and follow career and technical education programs of study and career pathways to earn credentials of value.
Key priorities of the Perkins Act
- Developing and implementing challenging academic and technical standards and assisting students in meeting such standards
- Integrating academic and career technical instruction, and linking secondary and postsecondary education
- Promoting leadership, initial preparation, and professional development of CTE teachers, faculty, administrators, and counselors
- Supporting partnerships among secondary schools, postsecondary institutions, local workforce investment boards, business and industry, and intermediaries
- Providing individuals with lifelong learning opportunities to help ensure U.S. competitiveness
For the 2021-2022 year, there are 30 CTE programs receiving Perkins funds for program improvement.
Some of the ways Perkins funding is being used to meet the purposes of the Perkins Act include:
- Purchasing equipment to provide state of the art learning experiences for students
- Improving the success rates of special student populations through an EOPS/CTE counselor who addresses the needs of economically disadvantaged students enrolled in CTE programs
- Hiring professional experts to assist students in increasing their knowledge base to increase board exam pass rates
- Funding of classroom tutors to improve student learning
- Providing Conference and Travel funds to allow faculty to maintain currency in their programs
- Supporting program specific advisory committee meetings as well as Mt. SAC Perkins advisory committee meetings.
