Captioning Services at Mt. SAC

Federal law requires all videos and multimedia to be accessible if it is shared with students or the public regardless of whether specific requests have been made. For videos, this means providing accurate captioning. Mt. SAC has now made it easy to meet this requirement with free captioning services for all employees of the college (professors, managers, and classified staff). Our local AP 5142: Students with Disabilities - Accessibility of Multimedia Instructional Material: Captioning translates the requirement for captions at Mt. SAC.

Need a Video Storage Solution? Create a Free 3C Media Account

3C Media Solutions is a free video storage service for employees throughout the California Community Colleges. Mt. SAC faculty, managers, and staff who wish to store and stream video can create a free account. 3C Media is like YouTube.com but the platform is only used by the community colleges instead of the entire world! Use it to securely store your videos online. Videos can be embedded in web pages, in classes, or be shared using a URL link without taking up lots of space (and without the ads!).

Are there any limitations on my 3C Media account?

Your 3C Media video storage area can only be used for videos that you have created, and to store YouTube.com links you wish to use. You can only use the integrated captioning services if you are a professor who is using the video content in a class. There are not currently limits on how many videos you can store, but there are limits on the size of each video. Please go to 3C Media Solutions for more information.

More About Using 3C Media
 Need Video Captions?
    • 1Are you a professor? Did you create a video to use in teaching?  Use 3C Media!
Get Free Captioning for your Original Instructional Video Content with 3C Media!

All employees in the California Community Colleges can store large video files for free using the 3C Media Solutions  storage service  Videos stored at 3C Media can be embedded in web pages, in classes, or be shared using a URL link without taking up lots of space.  However, free captions are only available to you under very specific conditions:

      1. if you created and own the content of the video
      2. if you are using the video in a class (it can be for face-to-face or online classes)
      3. you uploaded the video directly into 3C Media (youtube-linked videos cannot be captioned through 3C Media, even if the video belongs to you)
Why is 3C Media captioning limited?

Free captions with 3C Media are provided through a Distance Education (DECT) block grant provided by the Community College system. Even though the grant is for distance education, the account manager has clarified that they are for any digital video used in any class type, so you can request captions for any video you plan to share in a digital format for instructional purposes.  You will be provided with this information when you request captions within 3C Media.

How do I get started using 3C Media?

Accounts are free, but professors must register for your 3C Media account using the same Mt. SAC email address that appears as the primary email address in your Canvas LMS account. 3C Media will only sync with Canvas if you use the exact same email address to set up 3C Media as the one that is listed in your Canvas account.

      3C Media in Canvas

We have integrated 3C Media directly into Canvas. You can find it in any course by looking under Settings > Navigation in the hidden menu items. Drag to top or click enable to turn 3C Media on in your course(s). This allows you to access your library of videos stored in 3C Media from directly within your course! You can still access 3C Media outside of Canvas from the 3C Media website. Another handy feature is the ability to easily save your ConferZoom conferences in 3C Media.

Requesting 3C Media Captioning- for professor-created videos

With the click of a button you can request captions for any videos uploaded to 3C Media. Captions can be requested directly in the 3C Media website or from 3C Media within Canvas.  When making your request, you need to provide:

      • your name
      • the title of the video
      • the length of the video
      • the course where you will use it

That's it! Turnaround time is typically under 1 week.

Do you need captions for videos?

Need captions for a video you made but aren't using for instruction in a class? Have materials that you don't own but they have no captions... or bad captions? That's okay--we can help!

Mt. SAC Closed Caption Request Form

Please fill out the form below for your video captioning needs. Mt. SAC offers free and fast turnaround times.  Some projects are completed in-house, while most go to 3Play Media (you can check their website if you have questions about the services they offer).

You can also use this form to request information about captioning your own videos or if you have questions about a service you do not see listed here. Most requests can be completed within7-10 days from the request, but please leave as much time as you can to ensure you have your video ready when you need it. This is only an estimate: please not that long or complex jobs may require additional time.

Are you using video content that may already be captioned?

If you are using a video or excerpt from a feature movie, a popular documentary, or other content that could exist in an already-captioned format, please review our local library databases of already captioned video content.

Looking for fully-captioned videos at Mt. SAC?

There are tons of places where you can find fully-captioned video content, but the Mt. SAC Library video databases are our top recommendation! The library has multiple video databases that contain thousands of captioned videos on a variety of different subjects and topics. The two largest video databases in the Mt. SAC collection are Films on Demand and Kanopy. All video content that is licensed through our library is fully captioned to standard. Because we have already paid to license the content, you can use it in your classes and students can also find it through the library.  Films on Demand is integrated into the Canvas LMS so you can easily add those videos to your courses without additional sign-in. Kanopy and other videos can be embedded directly into courses. If you need assistance with finding videos, contact your Mt. SAC librarians. The Faculty Center for Learning Technology (FCLT) can also show you how to search and add videos into your Canvas courses.
