Aviation Management Undergraduate Program

The Program

 The Aviation Management Bachelor of Science degree program is designed to build upon technical training in aviation maintenance, flight, avionics technology, air traffic control, aircraft operations support and other aviation-related technical fields. This is a career-oriented degree program that meets the educational needs of individuals who have aviation-related work experience and/or technical training from a wide variety of backgrounds.

The Parts

The Aviation Management degree program consists of three parts:

• A 48-semester -hour major with courses taught in a weekend format that spans four semesters and can be completed in 16 months.
• A 34-semester - hour approved career electives requirement that can be satisfied through previously completed military schools, community college degree programs, other technical or industry training programs, or aviation -related work
• A 38-semester -hour University Core Curriculum (UCC) requirement that can by satisfied by transfer credit from other accredited institutions, including community colleges, CLEP, DANTES and proficiency training.

Our People

Full-time and part-time faculty are employed to teach for the Aviation Management program. The majority of the faculty are aviation professionals who have an extensive teaching and academic backgrounds, and/or are industry experts in their teaching areas. This mix of faculty, with academic and industry-related experience, is unique to the College of Applied Sciences and Arts off-campus programs and ensures the delivery of quality academics to all students.

Your Prospects

Graduates of SIU Carbondale's Aviation Management program include National Transportation Safety Board investigators, airport directors, managers, consultants, safety inspectors and aircraft product support personnel. Graduates also work in military, airline, corporate aviation, general aviation and air traffic control fields.

 II. Approved Career Electives

Approved  career electives are defined as formal coursework or its equivalent that is technical, managerial or supervisory in nature, and that is related to the aviation management major. Most students fulfill the requirements through previous education related to the major, previous occupational education credit related to the major, and/or previous work experience credit related to the major. This includes military technical training, MOS/NER/AFSC credit and experience.

III. University Core Curriculum - 38 Hours

University Core Curriculum (UCC) classes may be taken with SIU Carbondale community college partners, including Southwestern Illinois College,  and Mt. San Antonio College. Some UCC courses may be taken online.

IV. Capstone Option and SOC Agreement

Students entering the Aviation  Management program with an applied science associate degree that includes technical coursework related to aviation management or equivalent certification may be eligible for the capstone option.  Detailed requirements for this option are in the university's undergraduate catalog. Students who qualify and are admitted to capstone will have their UCC requirements reduced to a minimum 30 semester hours.

 The College of Applied Sciences and Arts is a member of the Service members Opportunity Colleges (SOC). In keeping with membership in SOC, transfer credit is accepted in all areas to include the major. However, each student must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework to meet residency requirements. Each student must have a minimum of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in all work taken.
