Equity Minded Curriculum Convening: Background
In 2019, the California Community College Curriculum Committee (5C) created a set of recommended priorities that focus on championing equity-minded curriculum and practices for credit and noncredit instruction.
In Fall 2021, 5C created a workgroup charged with developing guidance for the field and recommendations on how to support the implementation of culturally relevant and responsive curriculum at local levels.
In Spring 2021, Mt. SAC’s Academic Senate accepted the Educational Design Committee (EDC) and the Curriculum & Instruction Council (C&I) recommendation to create an Equity-Minded Curriculum Convening group in Spring 2021 consisting of cross-disciplinary credit and noncredit faculty as well as the Associate Vice President of Instruction with support from the Office of Instruction Administrative Specialists.
In Fall 2022, the first Equity-Minded Curriculum Cohort began with 18 participants who met live on Zoom every other week during the semester to collaborate and explore how best to infuse DEISA+ elements into course outlines. Several fall cohort members presented their revised course outlines at the Winter 2023 Triple R Curriculum Retreat while others shared at the EMCC spring 2023 Flex Day breakout session. Thanks to continued SEAP funding, the Spring 2023 Equity-Minded Curriculum Cohort welcomed a new group of participants from a variety of disciplines. Several instructors from the spring cohort plan to share their revised course outlines with the wider campus at the EMCC Fall 2023 Flex Day breakout session.
